What Is Solar Power?

This is the time when the need for efficiency is very high considering the rising cost of utilities and consumer goods. With the present economic condition, it is very hard to cope with the increase in oil prices affecting all the other aspects of man’s consumption including electricity, water, food and other basic necessities. It is good that there are options to consider in saving on electricity and other consumer needs. Solar energy is an option that is now increasing in popularity because of the advantages that it gives in terms of the family finances and the environment.

Solar power is basically a means to generate electricity from the main source of light, the sun. It can be directly or indirectly obtained. Photovoltaics is used for direct solar energy while concentrating solar energy is an indirect means. With photovoltaics, the need for electricity that is purchased normally generated from the burning of fossil fuels, can be eliminated.

There are already a good number of solar thermal power plants in different countries. Although solar power can be intermittent compared to the normal source of electricity, there have been ways to address this limitation to make sure that there in uninterruptible supply of electricity to those who are relying on solar power. This has been carefully studied and considered and will not pose any problem to those who are interested to use the service.

Before, the use of solar power became popular in calculators. There is no longer a need for batteries and the solar power is stored for night time use through the use of solar cell. This reduced the energy expenses and has become effective even until now.

There are also solar watches and other small gadgets that derive their energy from the sunlight. The technology has been around and it is now invading the bigger areas of life with the main source of electricity included in operating households and even big company operations. The advantages are great and the benefits are immense when using solar energy as electricity and energy source.

Another implementation can be a parallel use of solar power and the existing electricity source. In the long run, this will still be efficient and when the amount of solar power is enough, the backup can stay for emergency purposes. The savings that will be generated in this approach is significant. When collectively considered, the impact to the nationwide consumption will be huge.

The implementation of solar power starts with the solar cell which is also called photovoltaic cell. This cell converts the light into its corresponding electric current more commonly known as the photoelectric effect. This was first discovered by Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel as he observed that there are materials that release electrons when hit by the light coming from the sun. Consequently, these materials produce electric current. From this observation, the first solar sell was developed in the year 1880s by Charles Fritts. This prototype was found to convert less than 1% of the light into electricity and this study has been pursued in time. Today, the world’s biggest solar thermal power stations are located in the USA and Spain.

The use of solar power will surely improve the environment and it can contribute to the economic situation of households because of its efficiency and effectiveness in providing electricity.
