How to Use Squeeze Pages to Build Your List Quickly, Easily and For Free

In the big scheme of things, there are two groups that you market to as a business owner or entrepreneur. Group number one is your existing customers; you try to get more business from them. This is a terrific source of “low hanging fruit” by the way, and I and every other experienced marketer out there will tell you that if you had to choose between marketing to people who have already bought from you, or marketing to new people that might buy from you in the future, choose the former. Group number two that you can market to is new customers or prospects. You are trying to get them to become paying customers. Squeeze pages are an effective tool for getting people in that second group to opt-in to your mailing list so you can begin communicating with them and turning them into happy, paying customers.

A squeeze page is really just any page with a place for people to enter their email address. The reason they are called “squeeze” pages rather than the more boring and generic “opt-in” pages is that the whole purpose of a squeeze page is to get someone to put their email address in that little box and press the “submit” button. So, in effect, you as the marketer are psychologically “squeezing” or influencing the prospect to take that action. Motivation for parting with their email address is provided by offering to exchange something of value for that email address. For example, a free video tutorial, ebook, newsletter subscription, or the like.

Squeeze pages are a fundamental tool that online marketers use to add new prospects to their lists. Once you have an effective squeeze page that converts at a good rate, all you have to do is drive relevant traffic to the page, and you will grow your list. I’m not trying to make it sound like it’s a piece of cake to drive relevant traffic, but it actually can be done with no cash investment or very minimal cash investment of approximately one hundred dollars if you decide to outsource some of the work. Okay, let’s return now to the primary topic of this article. Squeeze pages can and should be used by businesses of all sizes and in all industries. Literally, from IBM to the hair salon, from attorneys to flower shops, squeeze pages should absolutely be part of every company’s online presence. If you look through the yellow pages and pick ten random businesses, you will find that those businesses that are even savvy enough to have websites are rarely collecting email addresses on their site. And if they are, they are not offering a very compelling reason for anyone to give their email address. That is such a huge missed opportunity! It’s like throwing your fishing line in the water with no bait. From a marketing perspective, that is pure insanity, especially because squeeze pages are so inexpensive and easy to create.

In addition, you can create specific squeeze pages targeted at various segments of your market. For example, if your market is “parenting help”, you could develop targeted squeeze pages about “Parenting Tips for Moms”, “Parenting Tips for Dads”, “Parenting Tips If Both Parents Are Working”, and “Parenting Tips for Single Moms and Dads”. This way, your squeeze pages can deliver specific incentives to capture email addresses based on the needs and desires of these particular demographic groups. This strategy of segmenting your market and communicating in a more personalized way with the sub-sets of your overall market is an advanced yet very easy strategy that can have a huge positive impact on your conversion rate (i.e. the percentage of visitors to your squeeze pages that actually opt in to your list.) Obviously, if you can improve your conversion rate, you’ll improve the number of prospects on your list.

Setting up a squeeze page is really just like setting up any other type of web page. You can have a squeeze page set up as a page within your larger website, or it can have its own domain name. Once you have created the web page, you will want an enticing title. Continuing with the “parenting help” example above, it could be something like “Are you sick and tired of coming home from work and having to deal with misbehaving, disrespectful kids?” This clarifies and reinforces the problem that you are then going to propose to solve by giving your visitors a bonus in exchange for their email address. Then, you can have either text or a video below the title (typically on the left side of the page) that further clarifies the problem and mentions benefits of opting in to your page. Then, typically to the right of the text you will want to have a box where prospects can enter their name and email address. This box should be clearly labeled with something like “Enter your name and email below to claim your copy of my invaluable free report right now…” Don’t worry about the perfect layout of your squeeze page, just get it set up, and then you can tweak and continuously improve it after you get some visitors.

Now, you’re probably wondering “where am I going to find this “opt in box” you mentioned?” The answer is, it couldn’t be easier… Your email marketing system (such as iContact, which I recommend for everyone except very advanced marketers) will automatically generate the code for these boxes. You don’ t have to know anything about code or programming, just how to copy and paste a line of code (technical gibberish) from one page to another. From your email marketing system, follow the instructions they provide to create a “sign up form” and then copy and paste the code they give you into the area of your squeeze page where you want the opt in box to go. (The opt in box is the little box where people enter their name and email address.)

If that last paragraph flow over your head, do not worry, you can find someone on eLance or Craigslist that can set this up for you for fifty to one hundred dollars (even less if you use someone overseas). My advice is that you do not try to learn any of this technical stuff yourself. Get in the habit of outsourcing it, and you focus on improving your marketing. One great benefit of this system is that the opt in box on your squeeze page will be automatically linked to your list in your email marketing system. So, when someone enters their name and email address, you don’t have to worry about adding it to your list, it will already be done automatically!

Imagine if you had to write a separate email every day to each of the hundred or thousand people on your email list for thirty days. You would never get it done, but you could get it done with an email autoresponder system. If you’ve ever signed up for something online, it’s likely that you’ve been on the receiving end of an autoresponder email. So many internet marketers use them because they work so well.

There are several inexpensive email-marketing services, such as iContact, Constant Contact and AWeber. They are in the range of $10-15 a month and it’s incredibly easy to set up your account. I personally recommend iContact, as I have used all three that I mentioned in this article plus another one called 1ShoppingCart in my own businesses, and have found iContact’s system to be the easiest and most user-friendly. Then, if you have a bunch of existing customer emails, you can upload your list of existing customer email addresses from an Excel file to your new account, and you’re ready to go! As you add new names to your list using strategies like squeeze pages or opt-in pages, those new leads will be automatically entered onto your list so you can market to them in the future.

Now that you’ve set up your account, and have uploaded your list, it’s time to begin communicating. It’s okay if you only have ten people on your list, just start communicating with them and providing value to them a couple times a week. Daily emails are generally too often and get annoying, unless people specifically signed up for a daily tip. However, if you are communicating with your list any less frequently than once every two weeks or so, you run the risk of people forgetting about you entirely in this age of information and short attention spans! Another helpful tip: don’t use ALL CAPS or exclamation points in your email subject lines, because Spam filters will likely identify these emails and pull them out before your customers can read them.

When thinking about content for your emails, keep it short, to a few paragraphs at maximum, and keep your content focused on one primary message. You are trying to deliver one important message in your email, not tell them everything about your industry or everything you can do for them. Remember, you’ll be communicating with your audience again soon enough! And, make sure you keep your content interesting and useful, so that your customers get in the habit of opening your emails and not just deleting them as “useless promotion”. Useful, funny and/or entertaining is so much more powerful for growing your relationships with your prospects and customers than dry, information overloaded, or overly promotional.

Now that you’ve written the first email, you can create an autoresponder series in your email marketing account, and make this email the first one in the autoresponder series. Then, you can draft as many follow up messages as you would like, and set them to be sent automatically to this list on, for example, day 4, then day 7, then day 12, etc. This way you can knock out a month’s worth of marketing in one shot, quickly and easily! You have now enabled your business to communicate with customers and prospects instantly and continually, for only a few dollars a month. Email marketing should pay for itself very quickly, as it usually only takes one new customer or add-on sale to pay for the service itself.

For the last couple of years, blogging has been all the rage online. But did you know that a blog is just a type of website that is updated periodically, with the most recent content on the top of the page? There is nothing particularly complicated or technical about a blog. The term blog is actually short for web-log, meaning an online journal or “log”. According to Technorati, there were approximately 112 million blogs in 2007, up from about 4.8 million in 2004. That means blogging has grown exponentially in the last several years, and there are probably at least 150 million blogs by now. I’m not sure anyone is really counting anymore… They’re everywhere!

It’s important to realize that a blog can be formatted to look like a traditional website. So, if a journal format does not make sense for your small business, don’t worry, on any good blogging platform such as Wordpress, you can quite easily change the appearance and layout of your blog.

Blogs have several key advantages over regular websites, when it comes to effectiveness for your business. First, blogs are very easy to update and add fresh content to, and since Google and other search engines will rank you higher if you have fresh content, using a blog will get you ranked higher! Second, the search engines believe that blogs generally have more interesting, specific, and timely information on a given topic, so they rank them higher for this reason too. Blogs also are typically written in conversational tone, which means you don’t have to spend a lot of time polishing your content… you can just talk to your audience freely. So, with blogs, they are set up in such a way as to save you the business owner or writer a lot of time, and the entire concept of blogging encourages the writer to be more conversational, and therefore more efficient, in creating content for the Internet. And finally, there are many great, free blogging platforms out there, meaning that you do not have to spend a bunch of money on web design to have a great online presence!

1. To create a blog for your business, you will first need to register a domain name with a registrar and get hosting for your site. You can do this at a site like GoDaddy.

2. Next, choose a free blogging platform like Wordpress or Blogger. I have had great success with the Wordpress platform and can recommend it from personal experience. Make sure you use the ORG version of Wordpress, not the COM version. They are both free, but the ORG version is much more robust and flexible. Whichever platform you choose, it is the framework that your blog will be created on.

3. Now you’ll want to download the files from Wordpress (there are super easy instructions on the Wordpress website about how to do this). Then, take these same files and upload them into your hosting account at GoDaddy, Host Gator, or wherever you have your site hosted. And, if you get stuck on this, GoDaddy’s staff will help you for free – just give their customer service number a call!

4. You can then make any kind of personalized changes that you’d like, including choosing and installing a theme for your blog. For Wordpress, there are tons of great looking and free themes out there if you just Google the term “Wordpress theme”. Also, if you are willing to pay in the neighborhood of $20 or $30 for a particularly nice theme, you can find some great ones at sites like ThemeForest and iThemes. If you’re new to blogging, make sure you download a theme that has some instructions from the theme author. Ideally, they would even provide a support forum or an email address where you can ask questions if you get stuck. Most of the premium themes that you might pay $20 or $30 for have such a service, so you should be in good hands.

5. To make your first blog post, you will want to go to YOURDOMAINNAME/wp-admin (on Wordpress). This will take you to the page called “Dashboard” where you can log in and do anything you want to your blog. This is where you will create new pages, add new blog posts, add new features like calendars or opt in boxes for collecting email addresses, adding photos or videos, and an incredible number and variety of other possible features. On the left side of the Dashboard, under “Posts”, click on “Add New” and you can enter in a title and content for your first post!

When you are ready to start flexing your blogging muscles and really tweaking your theme to specifically fit your business or purpose, keep in mind that you can search Google and YouTube for text and video answers to most of your questions. So many people are blogging now that I have found literally all possible questions I have asked have already been answered by someone in either a support forum or a YouTube video. This in and of itself is reason enough to use a popular platform like Wordpress. You’ll never be without support, and it’s free!

That’s it, you have now set up a blog and made your first post. With great free tools like Wordpress, it really couldn’t be easier to have a professional online presence that is always updated with fresh content, and therefore very attractive and visible to the search engines like Google.

Here are the 5 Fundamental Tools that you should have for your business to use the Internet effectively:

1. A Blog or Website – This is the “front door” for your business, so you want it to be professional looking and informative, so that prospects aren’t turned off. Using a website template or an old website built in 1999 will look like just that… and sends a subtle message to prospects that you aren’t on top of things. To get started, register a domain name at a registrar like GoDaddy (it’ll only cost you about $10 a year to own the domain name, and about $5 a month to host your website at that address). Then, use a free blogging platform like the one at Wordpress.org or Blogger to have a site that is professional looking and super easy to update. (Search engines like Google love fresh content!) For the record, I use Wordpress and am a huge supporter of Wordpress over any other blogging platform. Be sure to use Wordpress.org, not Wordpress.com. Both are free, but Wordpress.org is much more flexible and robust.

2. Online Videos – You’ll want to use some short, 1-2 minute videos to promote your business online. You can shoot these with almost any digital camera on the market today. The reason you want to use videos is that it is the next best thing to actually meeting your prospects in person. The bottom line is that on the Internet, video is the fastest way to build trust with your prospects. And, they have to trust you before they will buy from you! Good topics for your short videos are things like current promotions you are running, the benefits of using your products or services, and how to use your products. Then, create a free account at YouTube and upload your videos. Once on YouTube, you can copy and paste the code in the “Embed” box from YouTube to you Wordpress blog or other website, and the videos will show up on your blog or website – for free!

3. Email Autoresponders – This is really just a fancy term for a simple system that sends out a series of emails to your customer list. If you have ever signed up for a “free report” or anything like that online, you have no doubt received a bunch of emails from the person over the course of the next few weeks… that’s an email autoresponder. The reason you want to be using these systems is that you will stay top-of-mind with your customers and prospects and build more trust with them if you send them good, useful information. You can set up an account very inexpensively at sites like iContact and ConstantContact (in the neighborhood of $10-15 a month!) I have used both iContact and Constant Contact (as well as other systems like Aweber and 1ShoppingCart) and I highly recommend iContact unless you are trying to do some really complicated stuff, which I’m assuming you are not, for purposes of this article.

4. Squeeze Pages – A squeeze page is one of those sites that you have no doubt seen online where there is a box where you can enter your name and email address. Typically, you are asked to do this in exchange for something of value, such as a “free report” or a subscription to a weekly newsletter. This is a great technique that you can use in your market to find new prospects. And, it is very inexpensive marketing! You can set up a squeeze page as a separate page within your blog or website, or you can put one on its own domain name. And, the cool thing is, the email autoresponder service (e.g. iContact) will automatically generate the code you need to have one of those opt-in boxes on your website, so you can just copy and paste the code into your site and it will show up. No technical knowledge needed, just copy and paste! Here’s an extra tip about squeeze pages: In order for them to convince a high percentage of people to actually give you their email addresses, you need to offer a super-compelling bonus. For example, 10-page ebooks just are not cutting it anymore. However, a 200-page ebook, or access to 2 hours of video training online, would probably do the trick!

5. Social Networking – Since so many people are joining social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn every day, why not take a few minutes to set up your account and profile on these sites. This way, people that are your friends can refer you to their other friends, and before you know it, you will have massively widened your net online. Make sure you remember to put your web address prominently in your profiles so that it is easy for people on social networking sites to jump over to your website! Also, people on these sites can search for things that they need, so if you are an auto mechanic in Cleveland, mention those keywords throughout your profile and in your updates so that you can be found by interested prospects! These sites are free and growing fast, so you might as well get yourself positioned on them now. A tip to enhance your results on Facebook: Set up a “Fan Page” for your business within your regular personal Facebook account. Then, as you attract “Fans” to your business, you can mass-communicate to them through Facebook in a way similar to email marketing blasts. Also, be sure to offer them exclusive discounts and content, or otherwise make them feel special for being your Fan on Facebook. You want them to have reason to stick around and keep coming back for more!

To summarize, you don’t need any particular technical skills to be able to have an effective online presence, and you don’t need a big budget. If you have access to the Internet, can read and write, and can do things like create Microsoft Word documents and send emails, then you are at the level that you can start having real success online. For under $200 a year, and just spending a few hours of your time every month, you can implement all of the 5 fundamental tools I mentioned in this article! The Internet can be used for very low cost, guerrilla-style marketing, with a very high return on investment. The important thing is, just get started, focus on one thing at a time, and make sure you get the fundamentals right!
