How Does Solar Power Work?

Solar power became popular when it was first used in calculators where solar cells are used instead of traditional batteries. There were watches too that used solar energy and the advantage of not using batteries created long term savings. Today, solar energy is not only used in these gadgets, the use of solar energy is already possible to power any household. Gardens and pools can also use solar power as a source of electricity for hydroponics or heating, respectively. The reality is here that anybody can take advantage of solar power for the home and contribute to making the environment cleaner and better.

Solar power started with big solar panels installed in California supplying more than 10 million homes in the state. Today, the technology has evolved into more compact and smaller panels that can supply even more homes.

Basically, solar energy is used to derive electricity from sunlight. This can be done directly or indirectly through photovoltaic or through concentrating solar power, respectively. The use of photovoltaic converts the energy coming from the sun and converts it into a clean form of electricity that can power houses. These photovoltaic cells are composed of both positive and negative slices of silicon placed under a thin glass. When the protons of the rays of the sun hits the photovoltaic cell, the neutrons are knocked off the silicon. These neutrons become stored through the magnetic field and are connected to a circuit that forms electric current. Consequently, direct current electricity is generated and the process includes converting the DC into alternating current that is supplied to homes that can power all electrical appliances.

In the conversion process, not all of the converted electricity are caught in the process. There is a small percentage that is lost. But the percentage converted is already enough to supply the electricity needs of homes.

The good thing about using photovoltaic or PV cells is that there is no requirement for maintenance. Since the cells are static, which means there are no machines or moving elements in the system, the cells can last for four decades. The only requirement is to clean the cells annually and everything is considered properly maintained.

Solar power is very useful in household operations. With a grid tie system that you can set up in your home, you can enjoy the benefits of solar power that can help in your electricity needs. With a good roof space, the installation is easy and when you generate more electricity compared to what you need, you can even sell the electricity back. This can mean that you will no longer have to pay for your electricity.

The use of solar power will give many benefits to you and the environment. It is time to consider the installation in your home to contribute greatly to a cleaner environment not to mention the financial impact that it can give to your budget. This is a wise move and with the technology available, there is no reason not to take advantage of this during these trying economic times.
